Born the son of a harbor boat captain
on the waterfront in Washington. J.W. Young had a love of the sea
that took him around the world by the time he was sixteen years
old.
That love drew him
to this location; a spot where he could combine his gift as a
developer with his love for the ocean.
His dream city was
based on several successful cities with which he was familiar,
including Indianapolis, where he found broad, central boulevards
with circles, and Boca Raton with its distinctive
architecture.
Mr. Young also
knew his dream would not be complete unless his city had access to a
major port - more than minor inconvenience, since none existed at
the time.
So, as he mapped
out the framework for Hollywood, he also began planning a port just
to the north in a spot known then as "Bay Mabel" (and now called
"Port Everglades"). As history has shown, both
flourished.
Although J.W.
Young passed away without ever seeing Hollywood grow into the
thriving metropolis it has become, his vision lives on.
It is reflected in
the elegance of palm-lined Hollywood Boulevard. It is there in the
bustle of ships moving cargo in Port Everglades. It shows in the
smiles of children at play in the schoolyards, and adults enjoying
golf on the links. It is the heartbeat of a city that has grown more
